Transitioning to Updated ISO Standards from 2026

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is expected to release updated versions of ISO 9001:2015 Quality management systems and ISO 14001:2015 Environmental management systems in 2026.

As an accredited Certification Body, Southpac Certifications is actively preparing for a smooth and transparent transition for our clients and auditors.

What's changing, and when?

The new ISO 9001 standard is expected to be published in September 2026. This revision ensures the Quality standard remains relevant, addressing modern business needs and stakeholder expectations.

In addition, the updated ISO 14001 standard for Environmental Management Systems is expected to be published in April 2026. This new edition reinforces the dual priorities of protecting the environment while supporting strong business outcomes. The updated standard enables organisations to enhance performance, reduce costs, and maintain compliance, while strengthening credibility and delivering meaningful environmental impact.

How we will manage the transition

Once each new standard is published, Southpac Certifications will begin updating our own processes, training our auditors, and advising existing clients of new requirements under each standard, and when they will be required to show evidence of compliance.

  • Our certification processes, audit methodologies, and supporting materials will be updated to align with the new requirements.

  • All existing certified clients will be provided with clear guidance on transition expectations, timelines, and required evidence.

  • Our audit teams will receive comprehensive training to ensure consistent interpretation and competence across all assessments.

Relevant timelines and dates

Here is the breakdown of when to expect changes in relation to the new ISO standards.

  • 2026: Organisations can confidently pursue, maintain or renew their certification to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015

  • Late 2026 (upon release of new standards): Once the updated ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards are published, an expected 3-year transition period will begin
  • During transition (approx. 2026 – 2029): Certification bodies, including Southpac Certifications, will stop issuing new ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certificates towards the end of this transition period, and notify all clients of deadlines for transition audits to the updated standards
  • Late 2029 (projected): ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certificates will likely become invalid 3 years after the publication of the new standards
